Lesson 5 of 24أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ رَبِّي مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَذْنَبْتُهُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Astaghfirullaha rabbi min kulli dhanbin adhnabtuhu wa atubu ilayh.
I ask Allah, my Lord, to forgive me for every sin I have done, and I turn back to Him.
Story and lesson
Amira was running through the hallway when her elbow knocked a vase off the table. It crashed. Blue pieces went everywhere.
Her heart began to pound. She thought about hiding the pieces. She thought about saying the cat did it. But the cat was not even home.
So she took a deep breath, went to her mother, and said, "I broke the vase. I am so sorry."
Her mother looked at her for a moment. Then she hugged her. "Thank you for telling me the truth," she said. "Let's clean it up together."
Amira felt lighter. Not because the vase was fixed, but because she was no longer carrying a secret.
This is the feeling of astaghfar. The word means asking for forgiveness. We all make mistakes, and Allah knows we will. What He loves is when we come back to Him instead of running away.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, was the best of people, and he asked Allah for forgiveness every day, many times. So asking for forgiveness is not only for people who did something terrible. It is for everyone who wants a clean heart.
And there are two parts in this kalima. "Astaghfirullah" means I ask Allah to forgive me. "Wa atubu ilayh" means I turn back to Him, and I want to do better.
