Lesson 1: Prophet Adam, Alayhi as-Salam: Owning a Mistake

Module 1 · Adam and Nuh: Forgiveness and Help

Owning a Mistake

Prophet Adam, Alayhi as-Salam

Dua 1 of 30

Source: Quran, Surah Al-A'raf, 7:23

Quran context

Prophet Adam, Alayhi as-Salam, and his wife made a mistake in the Garden. They could have tried to hide, but instead they turned to Allah and spoke honestly. Their dua teaches children that when we do something wrong, the brave path is to admit it, ask Allah for forgiveness, and try to fix what happened.

Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal-khasireen.

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.

Note: The audio may recite the full Quran ayah. The Arabic focus shown above may begin partway through the ayah.

What children learn: Everyone makes mistakes. The best thing is not to hide, lie, or blame someone else. We say sorry to Allah, try to fix what we did, and ask for mercy.

Hadith connection: A related authentic hadith teaches a dua of repentance: Abu Bakr asked the Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam, for a supplication to say in prayer, and he taught him to say that he had wronged himself and that only Allah forgives sins. Reference: Sahih Muslim 2705a.

Talk together: Why is it brave to say, "I was wrong"?
