Short surahs for beginners

Where to start and how to learn them

Start with Al-Fatiha for prayer, then learn short surahs such as Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar, and Al-Asr with accurate guidance.

Begin with Al-Fatiha because it is central to Salah, then add a short surah such as Al-Ikhlas. Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar, Al-Asr, and Al-Kafirun are also common early choices. Learn from a verified Arabic text and have pronunciation checked rather than choosing only by length.

Which surah should a beginner learn first?

Give Al-Fatiha priority if you are learning to pray. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught its essential place in prayer; see Sahih al-Bukhari 756. A teacher can explain how a new Muslim or learner should pray while still working on it.

After Al-Fatiha, there is no single compulsory order for memorising short surahs. A practical list is:

Which surah should a beginner learn first?
SurahNumberAyahsMain theme in brief
Al-Ikhlas1124Allah's absolute oneness
Al-Kawthar1083Abundant good and worship
Al-Asr1033Time, faith and patient truth
Al-Falaq1135Seeking refuge from created harms
An-Nas1146Seeking refuge from the whisperer
Al-Kafirun1096Clarity in worship

Ayah counts follow the standard numbering displayed on Quran.com. Ease also depends on unfamiliar sounds, repeated endings, and how well you understand the sequence.

How to learn a short surah accurately

  1. Listen to the whole surah from a reliable reciter.
  2. Read one ayah while looking at the Arabic.
  3. Repeat in short phrases without rushing.
  4. Recite without looking, then check the text.
  5. Join the ayah to the one before it.
  6. Recite to a competent teacher.

Use transliteration only as temporary support. It cannot show every Arabic sound or rule accurately.

Why learn Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas?

These surahs are short and have established uses beyond ordinary recitation. Aisha reported that the Prophet recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas before sleep, then passed his hands over his body, repeating the practice three times. See Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.

That virtue should not turn memorisation into a race. Correct the wording first, learn a sound meaning, and practise regularly.

Common questions

Can I recite the same short surah in every prayer?

A learner may repeat a surah they know. Continue learning so your recitation grows, and ask a teacher about the detailed Sunnah of recitation in different prayers.

Is the shortest surah always the easiest?

No. Al-Kawthar has three ayahs, but unfamiliar sounds may need careful coaching. Choose a manageable surah and prioritise accuracy.

How quickly should I memorize one?

There is no required number of days. A useful target is accurate recall after a gap, not fast performance immediately after listening.

If Al-Fatiha still needs work, schedule a pronunciation check. Otherwise choose one short surah, read its meaning, and learn its first ayah today.
