To perform wudu, make the intention to purify yourself for worship, wash your hands, rinse your mouth and nose, wash your face and arms to the elbows, wipe your head, and wash your feet to the ankles. Keep the Quranic requirements complete and follow a reliable teacher for details in your school of law.
Wudu steps in order
- Make the intention in your heart. You do not need a special spoken formula.
- Say Bismillah.
- Wash both hands, including between the fingers.
- Rinse the mouth.
- Gently rinse the nose and expel the water.
- Wash the whole face.
- Wash the right arm and then the left, including the elbows.
- Wipe the head with wet hands.
- Wash the right foot and then the left, including the ankles and between the toes.
The Quran names washing the face and arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles in Al-Ma'idah 5:6. A detailed demonstration attributed to Uthman ibn Affan appears in Sahih al-Bukhari 159.
Do you wash each part once or three times?
Complete washing once can fulfil the wash where the whole required area is reached. Washing up to three times is established in the Prophetic demonstration. Do not exceed three out of habit, and do not waste water.
The head is wiped rather than washed. How much of the head must be wiped and some other details are discussed differently among the legal schools. Learn the method followed by a qualified local teacher rather than mixing isolated rulings from short videos.
Areas people often miss
Check the elbows, heels, ankles, spaces between fingers and toes, and the edges of the face. Remove anything that forms a barrier preventing water from reaching the skin. Ordinary colour without a physical barrier is a separate issue; ask a qualified teacher when unsure about a specific product.
What breaks wudu?
Passing urine, stool or wind breaks wudu. Sleep and loss of awareness require more detail because the ruling can depend on how the sleep occurred. Schools also differ on some questions involving touch, bleeding, and other matters. Use a dependable handbook or teacher for your school.
If you only doubt whether wudu broke, do not build a ruling on recurring uncertainty. Persistent doubts can become exhausting; ask a scholar for guidance suited to your situation.
Common questions
Can I speak while making wudu?
Speaking does not by itself invalidate wudu. Keeping attention on the act is still helpful.
Must the steps be continuous?
Continuity is treated with different levels of legal importance across the schools. A beginner should perform the steps without unnecessary gaps and ask a teacher about exceptions.
What if water is unavailable or harmful?
The same Quranic passage that gives the basis of wudu also addresses tayammum in certain circumstances. Because illness, injury, travel and water access require careful application, seek qualified guidance for your case.
A final check
Before leaving the wash area, check that water reached every required boundary. Accuracy and moderation are the aim, not anxiety or excessive water.
