Say Bismillah before eating and praise Allah after your meal. If you forget to mention Allah's name at the start, say Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu when you remember. Begin with the short phrases and understand their meaning, then learn a longer established praise after food if you wish.
What should you say before eating?
Dua pronunciation
Sahih al-Bukhari 5376This short recording says Bismillah only. It does not contain the longer wording for remembering during a meal.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Transliteration: Bismillah.
Meaning: In the name of Allah.
In Sahih al-Bukhari 5376, Umar ibn Abi Salamah describes the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, teaching him to mention Allah's name before eating. The same report includes eating with the right hand and from what is near him in the dish.
For a child learning the habit, say the phrase together before the first bite. Explain it in ordinary language: “We are beginning in Allah's name.” A calm reminder at the table gives the words a clear occasion.
What if you forget Bismillah?
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
Transliteration: Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu.
Meaning: In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.
This wording comes from Sunan Abi Dawud 3767, graded Sahih by al-Albani on the linked source page. The report gives these words for someone who forgot the opening mention of Allah's name.
If a child remembers during the meal, help the child say the phrase. There is no need to turn the reminder into a public test of how much the child knows.
What can you say after eating?
Dua pronunciation
Sahih Muslim 2734aThis recording says Alhamdulillah only. It does not contain the longer praise shown later in the guide.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
Transliteration: Alhamdulillah.
Meaning: All praise belongs to Allah.
Sahih Muslim 2734a teaches that Allah is pleased with a servant who praises Him in connection with eating and drinking. Alhamdulillah gives a beginner a short expression of that praise to remember after a meal.
Explain gratitude through the meal in front of the child. Thank Allah for the food and thank the people who prepared or served it. You can model both without adding a long lesson to every breakfast.
Is there a longer praise after food?
Sahih al-Bukhari 5458 records the following praise after the Prophet's meal:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ، وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ، وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ، رَبَّنَا
Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahi kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi, ghayra makfiyyin, wa la muwadda'in, wa la mustaghnan anhu, Rabbana.
Plain-English explanation by DuasForMe: Abundant, good and blessed praise belongs to Allah, our Lord. We continue to need Him and His provision.
The explanation summarises the meaning for a beginner; use the linked Arabic text and a capable teacher when learning the full wording. Learn it in small phrases and join them back together.
How do you make the habit easier for children?
Start with one task at a time. First practise Bismillah before the meal. Once that is familiar, add Alhamdulillah afterwards. Keep the longer phrase available for gradual learning instead of expecting every child to recite it immediately.
A small reminder near the eating place can help. Keep it clean and away from spills. The reminder is a family learning aid, not a required part of the practice.
Common questions
Must we memorise every phrase before starting?
Begin with the short words you can learn accurately. Add the longer wording as you become familiar with its sounds and meaning.
Can we use the same practice at breakfast and dinner?
Yes. Tie the opening and closing words to ordinary meals so the child knows when to use them.
Is transliteration enough for pronunciation?
It is a reminder of the sounds, not a complete representation of Arabic. Listen to a capable teacher, especially for the longer praise.
Practise at the next meal
Before eating, say Bismillah together. After eating, pause for Alhamdulillah. Explain each phrase once in words your child understands and return to the habit at the next meal.
